The Shot that Missed
3 Shots. One bullet hit JFK in the head, another caused 7 would between two men.
One missed the car completely. The Commission was never clear if that was the first or second shot.
It makes a huge difference in timing because the gun jammed during the shooting. There was a dented shell.
Whichever sequence it was fired, a bullet was seen striking the grass on the south side of Elm St.
Richard Dudman | The Republic 12/21/63
"A group of police officers were examining the area at the side of the street where the President was hit,
and a police inspector told me they had just found another bullet in the grass.“
Dallas Times Herald 11/23/63
"Dallas Police Lt. J. C. Day of the crime lab estimated the distance from the sixth-floor window...
to the spot where one of the bullets was recovered at 100 yards.”
Up until the end of April '64, the Commission was struggling with the hit vs. miss results.
They were following the FBIs conclusions, one shot hit JFK, another hit JBC and the third was the head shot.
It was testimony from DP Officer JW Foster, and witness James Tague that forced the staff to address the missed shot.
That stray compelled the invention of the Single Bullet Theory.

DPD JW Foster | April 09,1964
Mr. FOSTER – I moved down the roadway there,
down to see if I could find where any of the shots hit.
Mr. BALL – Find anything?
Mr. FOSTER – Yes, sir. Found where one shot had hit the turf there at the location.
Mr. BALL – Hit the turf?
Mr. FOSTER – Yes, sir.
Mr. BALL – Did you see any marks on the street in anyplace?
Mr. FOSTER – No, a manhole cover. It was hit.
they caught the manhole cover right on the corner and –
Mr. BALL – You saw a mark on the manhole cover did you?
Mr. FOSTER – Yes sir.
Mr. BALL – Went into the turf?
Mr. FOSTER – Yes, sir.
Mr. BALL – Did you recover any bullet?
Mr. FOSTER – No, sir. It ricocheted on out.

EXTRA BULLETS AND MISSED SHOTS IN DEALEY PLAZA | Michael T. Griffith
"Officer Foster also reported that a bullet struck the concrete part of the above mentioned manhole cover.
It is not known if this was the same missile that made the dug-out hole in the grass a few feet from the manhole cover.
The bullet might have skipped off the manhole cover and then embedded itself in the grass.
Or, the mark on the concrete could have been made by a separate bullet,
and thus would represent another miss fired from the same approximate location.
The sewer cover and the hole in the turf were about 3-5 feet apart,
and the latter was farther down the side of Elm Street.
(that is, it was slightly farther away from the TSBD than was the sewer cover).
