Little Girl Blue | Janis Joplin
(Live Tom Jones TV Show 4th December 1969)
Janis Lyn Joplin, was born in January 1943, in Port Arthur TX.
In high school she was often bullied and outcast.
As a result she found a small group of other misfits as her friends.
Those girls introduced her to records by Bessie Smith, Leadbelly, and Lightnin' Hopkins.
Soon, Janis developed a love for singing jazz and blues, and began performing in local clubs.
She made a handful of personal recordings before moving to San Fransisco in 1963.
There, she met guitarist, Jorma Kaukonen, later a founding member of the Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna.
But by May '65 Janis was a mess, heavy drinking, injecting methamphetamine, and arrested for shoplifting.
Her friends suggested she go back to Port Arthur to sober up. Once back at her parents, Janis stayed clean.
1966, Janis was back in San Francisco and attracted the attention of a local group, Big Brother and the Holding CO.
Concert promoter Chet Helms, encouraged her to audition, once accepted, the group began work on their debut album.
They made a huge splash at Monterey Pop and by mid 1968, were billed as "Janis Joplin and Big Brother & the Holding Company".
The debut album "Cheap Thrills" scored her first major single, "Piece of My Heart" and other classics "Turtle Blues" and "Summertime".
But by Oct '68, Big Brother broke up, and Janis was on her own again.
Joplin took the guitar player from Big Brother (Sam Andrew) and formed the Kozmic Blues Band.
"Kozmic" was made from various session musicians in the area, and added horns.
Her 2nd album, "I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!", did not do as well as the first.
In mid - late 1969, Janis and Kozmic Blues were doing television appearances.

The Tom Jones Show
In the mid to late 1960's Welsh singer, Tom Jones had string of hits.
"It's Not Unusual" and "What's New Pussycat?" made him a popular singer of the British Invasion.
In the US, the ABC Television Network, gave Jones a one hour variety show in Sept. 1969.
"This is Tom Jones" ran from 1969-1971 and had some of the biggest stars of the day,
Peter Sellers, The Moody Blues, Herman’s Hermits, The Dave Clark Five, The Who
Tony Bennett. Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Bob Hope, were only a few of the many guests.
In December 1969 Janis appeared with, Glen Campbell, and (an in prov group) The Committee.
Her first song was a cover of the Nina Simone recording "Little Girl Blue"
She seems really nervous as she approaches the mic. Just a little girl.
She looks for her cues. Sam is on guitar, and may be giving her the marks.
At first she knows right where to come in, she holds the mic on the stand, and she is more relaxed.
But watch her coming back from the first break, she looks to the band for the cue to begin again.
When it happens once more near the end, it is in her eyes, she knows right when, like, "I've got this now."
It is truly an outstanding performance, from a phenomenal singer that would not last another year.
On Oct 4, 1970, Janis Joplin was found dead in her hotel of a heroin overdose.
She was only 27 years old. Try watching this thru the tears in your eyes.
