Hugh Anderson Adolphus Hotel in Dallas TXIn 1963, Hugh Anderson was the Manager, of the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas. He testified before the Grand Jury on Aug. 31, 1967. He was at the Adolphus for about 10 years, and was acquainted with some of the characters. He knew Jack Ruby, and Tony Zoppi. He said, he had gotten a call from a Lee Odum, about a friend of his niece that, "...wanted to put a bull fight on in New Orleans, and she wrote me a letter and asked me if I would introduce him and show him where to go when he got here." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Grand Jury TestimonyQ. Do you know Lee Odom? A. I have heard the name, but do not know the person. Q. Well, if it will refresh your memory, Lee Odom came up some months ago when it was announced by him in Dallas that he had met Clay Shaw because you introduced him to Shaw at the Roosevelt. He said that he came to see you because he was interested in the bull fight business.

John HeindelJohn René Heindel was an ex-marine that served at Atsugi Naval Base in Japan while Lee Oswald was stationed there. His time while Lee was there was brief, only a couple of months. He testified before the Grand Jury two times in Oct. of 1967. During his first visit, they discussed required security clearances at Atsugi, as well as the U2 takeoffs and landings. As a Radar Operator Lee, was required to have a higher then average security clearance for GCA [Ground Control Approach]. James Donovan, Oswald's immediate supervisor at El Toro, California said, "...that Oswald must have had a secret clearance in the Marine Corps based on the work he was performing..." and according to FBI Reports, Donovan reported, "...Oswald was very interested in the U-2 airplane while he was stationed in the Philippines."Kerry Thornley, testified that Lee had occasionally spoken Russian with a soldier at El Toro during the 'morning muster'. But, Heindel never served with Oswald at El Toro. He knew of Lee briefly in Japan and otherwise hardly remembered him. The only encounter that John recalled was asking Lee, if he had known a certain a girl named Oswald, from New Orleans. Still, a Warren Commission attorney, reminded Thornley that, the man that he had spoken Russian with was this, "John Heindel"Attorney Burnes, read to the Grand Jury from the sworn affidavit between Thornley and Attorney Jenner from the Commission. Jenner lied to Thornley when he told him, he had spoken to Heindel, "Oh, I spoke to him, he is harmless'..." The Ex-Marine came back to testify on Oct 19, 1967. His second visit was just a followup from the previous. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Grand Jury TestimonyQ. Do you have any recollection as to his function? Assignment? A. Yes, he was in radar involved with GCA and things like that. Q. Ground control approach? A. Yes, sir. Q. Does that require a security clearance? A. Everyone that I have ever known worked in GCA had to have some sort of clearance. Q. Would it be fair to say Oswald had a higher security clearance than the average Marine? In GCA? A. Apparently so. I really could not say. Q. Would it be fair to say working in GCA you have to have a higher security clearance than the average infantryman? A. Yes. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Dig It OutBuried in the Warren Report, is a letter signed by a John Rene Heindel of New Orleans LA., dated May 19 th, 1964: "I served in the United States Marine Corps from July 15, 1957 until July 15, 1961. I was stationed at Atsugi, Japan, with Lee Harvey Oswald. While in the Marine Corps, I was often referred to as Hidell - pronounced as to rhyme with 'Rydell'. This was a nickname and not merely an inadvertent mispronunciation."

Burton Klein Burton Klein, was a local attorney that contacted the Grand Jury through the District Attorneys Office. He testified on Oct. 19, 1967. He is requesting an audience for two of his clients, Miguel Torres, Alvin Beaubouf, "... will come into the Grand Jury room as accusers, accusing the District Attorney and members of his staff and others of violating the criminal laws."As a former District Attorney himself, Klein knows the Grand Jury has no such power. As Attorney Richard Burnes explains, "...a lawyer may not appear and controvert evidence presented by a District Attorney in a Grand Jury room."There was nothing he could do except have each of the men come in and testify to what they know directly, otherwise it is hearsay. Miquel Torres was already before the Grand Jury twice, and both times, had more than available opportunity to speak his concerns. He refused to verify statements he made on the NBC show against the Garrison and the DAs office. If not then, when would he tell? This Grand Jury had asked several times, from several witnesses, what is the evidence the DA has acted inappropriately or violated laws? Miquel said nothing. The Grand Jury knew he had nothing. Burton Klein was quickly dismissed. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Grand Jury TestimonyBY A JUROR:Q. I believe you ought to leave, Mr. Klein. You aggravate me. A. You are aggravated? Well, I am aggravated too. Q. Well, that is your problem, I don't want to hear your problem. A. My problem? Its a problem for the whole community. I thought you were here representing the community. Q. Let us see the man or men who are making these charges. Mr. Klein, didn't you express lack of trust in the last Grand Jury as to their taking any independent action? A. That is correct.

William DalzellWilliam Dalzell was from St. Cheyanne, Wyoming. testified to the Grand Jury on Nov. 02, 1967. In 1961, he was living in New Orleans and setup "Friends for Democratic Cuba" with Martin McAuliffe & Guy Banister. This is all very interesting because that was the group that attempted to make the truck purchase at Bolton Ford. Dalzell was the President of American Oil CO. in Louisiana. His partner in the business was his attorney, Steven Plotkin. He admitted he had done work for the CIA in the early '60's. Sergio Arcacha Smith helped him set up the Anti-Castro group. These groups prompted an interest by FBI Agents, Warren DeBrueys and Regis Kennedy. Both men had a direct connection to Lee. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Grand Jury TestimonyQ. Where was the New Orleans Headquarters for CIA in 1963? A. In front of the Balter Building, right across the street from the Balter Building. Friends of Democratic Cuba. Q. You mean in the Masonic Temple? A. Yes sir. Q. Friends of Democratic Cuba, when was that incorporated? A. In January 1961, I believe. Q. Do you know how long it was in existence? About - until May or June of '61? A. Yes sir.

Steven R. Plotkin | Nov. 02, 1967 Attorney, Steven Plotkin, returned to the Grand Jury on November 02, 1967. The second visit related to monies paid by someone to Plotkin on behalf of Gordon Novel. The attorney claimed, client privilege. He was very careful not to immediately say no. Naturally, if there was no questionable source involved, he could answer. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Grand Jury TestimonyQ. In recent weeks did you receive money in connection with your representation of Gordon Novel? A. Yes. Q. Did this money come from Gordon Novel? A. I am not going to answer that on the basis of the attorney-client privilege, but it did not come from any United States Government Agency directly or indirectly. Q. Did it come from a person other than Gordon Novel? A. I will invoke the privilege on that. Q. The fact that it comes from someone else would seem to exclude the attorney-client privilege. A. I didn't say that - I didn't say that it came from anybody else. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ On the Trail of the Assassins | Jim Garrison "I learned that the Agency was actually attempting to obstruct our investigation. This only added to my suspicions that the C.I.A. - or some part of it-had been deeply involved in the assassination. The Agency's attempted obstruction of our investigation became increasingly perceptible when we tried to extradite Gordon Novel from Ohio. This legal maneuver grew out of the clandestine visit by some of Guy Banister's associates to the blimp base at Houma, Louisiana. They had removed munitions from the Schlumberger bunker in the middle of the night and brought them into New Orleans. "We located Novel in Ohio and moved for his extradition in April 1967. We wanted to know why the ammunition had been taken from the Schlumberger bunker, why it had been brought into New Orleans, and why the photograph of the truck had been sold to Walter Sheridan. In the following weeks, Gordon Novel, through interviews and press conferences in Ohio, began providing the public with more enlightenment about some of the C.I.A.'s activities than we had been able to develop in the previous several months. Among other things, he announced that, the Schlumberger bunker business had been a CIA enterprise all the way."

James HicksJames Hicks, was a resident of Dallas, that claimed to have been in Dealey Plaza at the time of the assassination. He contacted Garrison's office after hearing about Shaw trial in the news. He testified before the Grand Jury on Jan. 11, 1968. I can find no record of him being interviewed by FBI, local Sheriffs, or Dallas Police in the more than 4 years since it had happened. "This one officer, I told him what I had seen and he took my name and I have not heard anything from him."Hicks claimed to have seen a man, crouched down in the open truck of a car, backed up to the fence behind the Grassy Knoll. It's hard to identify exactly where he was. He saw this guy, that had what looked like a pipe, but later realized was a rifle. He heard the buzz of the bullets over his head from behind, but it hinders his legitimacy without being found in film or photographs. Later, there were stories of him admitting to being a radio communications contact between shooters. It's all very interesting. Further research is necessary. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Grand Jury TestimonyQ. Were there other cars around it? Or was it by itself? A. Yes, quite a few other cars. This was a parking area, people who wanted to see the parade, all this back in here was full of cars, and this was full of cars. Q. Were there any people standing around? A. Quite a few people were standing around. Q. Were there any cars in front of this car? A. No, it was backed up to the fence. Q. The trunk of the car was open and the man was kneeling in the trunk? A. Yes.

Kerry ThornleyKerry Thornley was an ex-Marine that had served in El Toro CA., with Lee Harvey Oswald in early 1959. He appeared before the Grand Jury on Feb. 10, 1968. Oddly, he wrote a book about Lee called, "The Idle Warrior". Thornley started the book while in the service and based the character on Oswald. "I was going to take a hypothetical Marine who was going to start off very wide-eyed and I was going to end him up in Russia." It is strange, this two-bit loser should render such attention. Thornley went on to finish the book more than one year before the assassination. On the stand, Thornley was caught up in a lie he had told Warren Commission Attorney Jenner. The ex Marine said that, Lee had spoken Russian to another soldier in his unit at morning muster, but he could not remember who. At some point, the name, Heindel, was brought up, which was not possibly be true, because Thornley did not serve in Atsugi with either Heindel or Oswald. Yet, Jenner told Thornley that was the soldier. John Heindel: "I can assure you, I can't speak Russian."
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Grand Jury TestimonyQ. You associate Heidel with speaking Russian with Oswald? A. No, this isn't the way it was at all. When the Secret Service asked if I had ever heard the name Alex James Heidel it struck me it struck me just like the name Guy Banister did, I had heard it, and I said 'hey wait, that guy who spoke Russian with Oswald', and I said "now, I am not sure, but there was a guy with a name something like that who spoke Russian in the ranks with Oswald". I associate it with Hyndel when after I gave my testimony to the Warren Commission I walked to the Supreme Court and I asked where is Delgado and he said 'Oh, Delgado is in New York', and I said 'where is Lawson, did you talk to Lawson', did you talk to this guy, that guy, you know all my old buddies in the Marine Corps, what they were doing, and along the line as I am saying this, I said "Oh, by the way, who was it who used to speak Russian in the ranks with Oswald, you know that guy I kept trying to remember and I kept associating with Heidel", and Jenner looked at me and he grinned and this guy gives you the feeling that he has a mind like a steel trap and a sparkle' in his eye and really he is a very sharp guy and he has a lot of wit about him too, and he got this little sparkle in his eye and he said "it was Heidel". ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ On the Trail of the Assassins | Jim Garrison"Even after Kerry Thornley’s appearance before the Grand Jury, the strange intersections between his life and Lee Oswald’s remained enigmatic. Was Thornley an agent of the intelligence community? Had he impersonated Oswald or coached others to do so? Did he know more than he was saying? I did not know the answers back in the late 1960s. And the whole bizarre saga of Thornley became even more enigmatic when we later discovered a letter he had written to a friend in Omaha, Nebraska." Writing in February 1964, a few months after his arrival in the Washington, D.C., area, Thornley made a brief reference to President Kennedy’s assassination: "The whole thing was very interesting for a while, the assassination, because—on the surface there was good reason for the unenlightened SS and F.B.I. to suspect I might’ve had a hand in it. We had some polite conversations and finally, I guess, I was cleared. No word from them lately.
I hope, though, my move to this area scared the piss out of em. Whether or not I’ll be asked to put my 2¢ in at the Warren Hearing, I don’t know. Or care. When it is all over, though, I may yet go piss on JFK’s grave, RIP."

Marina Oswald PorterMarina Oswald Porter, is the widow of Lee Harvey Oswald. In 1965, she married Kenneth Porter, a local electronics worker. She appeared before the Grand Jury on Feb. 08, 1968. Garrison brought up things that Marina did not seem to be aware of. "Seems like they didn't point out any of these things which indicate the whole story was not brought out to you. Do you ever have the feeling that you were not given the whole story?" A: "No, I just know as much as he told me."She said, De Mohrenschildt also knew Oswald had a gun, Lee had shown it to him, then, further questioning along that line, "I don't remember right now" She seems to have been prepared regarding answering certain specifics. It seems unlikely she would not remember what had already been asked in over 10 weeks of "protective custody" interrogations. She seemed more at ease to talk. A very interesting discussion ensued when the topic turned to Mrs. Paine. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Grand Jury TestimonyQ. Do you still see Ruth Paine? A. No, I like her and appreciate what she did. I was advised by Secret Service not to be connected with her, seems like she was . . not connected . . she was sympathizing with the CIA. She wrote letters over there and they told me for my own reputation, to stay away. Q. The Secret Service told you this? A. Yes.

Thomas Beckham Tom Beckham was one the more interesting of all the witnesses in the process. He testified before the Grand Jury on Feb. 15, 1968. He was con man, and long time friend of Jack Martin. Beckham spent a long time on the stand, his testimony is about 162 pages. Questions about him working for Ex FBI Guy Banister, "I helped him on domestic, and I brought him information on several things."The first part of the interview seemed to go along fine. Beckahm was somewhat guarded, careful how he answered. The discussion went along about, what work Tom may have done for Banister, if it was work. Then this happened: Q. Did you ever talk to him about anything connected with the Central Intelligence Agency? A. I rather stand on the Fifth Amendment on that one.He was asked to leave the room while the attorneys discussed their course of action. Then, just before lunch, he was admonished. Q. You are lying. Now when you come back I want no more lies. You are dismissed now, come back in an hour, but no more lies because the name of that is perjury. You can go outside. After the break, Beckham was much more accommodating, and talked more freely. He revealed Banister's involvement with CIA Anti Castro Groups. He himself, was involved in setting up a lease in the Balter Building for one of these groups. Sergio Arcacha Smith said, "...the Central Intelligence Agency was training them. Training them in the Algiers Naval Station." Before he left, he told the story about some guy he met in a Men's Tie Shop in the French Quarter. He had never seen this man. David Richards, already knew Beckham's name when they met, like he knew Tommy would be there. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Grand Jury TestimonyQ. Not only does he want to hear, you have got to answer. Now what did he say? A. This man claims...he walked up to me and told me he had some information, he told me this information and I couldn't believe it, he says boy, you got a lot of problems, I think you are in a frame, and I said what do you mean I want to know about it, well, he presented me with an affidavit, gosh.... BY MR. GARRISON:Q. Why don't you tell me about it, I'd like to know. A. He said that you are supposed to be...that you had some intimate affairs with a gay guy down in the French Quarter, two of them... Q. Well, that's fine, since it never happened it couldn't bother me less. A. ...and he claims that he knew this guy Shaw and he also claims that he knew this Shaw as being this other man... ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ HSCAIn a 1977, HSCA interview with Joan Blackmear, Beckham said, he did not believe Lee Oswald assassinated JFK, and that he, (Beckham) was involved with "...a group of ex-CIA members, who plotted, carried out the assassination and framed LHO as part of the process"

Ruth Hyde PaineRuth Paine was a friend of Lee & Marina Oswald shortly after they arrived in the US in June of 1962. She was a friend George de Mohrenschildt, she spoke Russian and was separated from her husband Michael in 1963. Marina had lived with Ruth for a short time in April '63, before leaving for New Orleans, and again when she returned in Sept. Mrs. Paine testified to the Grand Jury on April 18, 1968. Both Oswalds suspected she had something to do with "this affair", and spoke out loudly about it to the Commission. It is remarkable that all the evidence against Lee, was from in that house. Marguerite Oswald: "And there is too much evidence pointing to the assassination and my son being the guilty one in this particular house. All through the testimony, sir, everything has come from this particular house." Robert Oswald: "I still do not know why or how, but Mr. and Mrs. Paine are somehow involved in this affair..." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Grand Jury TestimonyQ. Who unpacked the car when you got to Irving? A. Marina and I for the most part. The heavy things we just left in the car until my husband, Michael, came, and he put the rest of it in the garage. Q. When you were unpacking it did you see anything that might have been a rifle? A. No, I didn't. Q. Its alleged to have been wrapped in a blanket or something. A. I think almost certainly it must have been wrapped in a blanket, don't you? Because alone in a blanket I would have noticed it, at least I would have noticed it was something long, whereas my guess that it arrived un-assembled or taken apart, and then he assembled it later, and I judge it had to be in my car, I don't think he would a have gone across the border into Mexico with it over his back.
