Checks and Balances by Herbert Blenner | June 22, 2012, 03:44:24 PM Many people fail to understand the limitations of the pathologists and coroners who comprised the medical panels. By training, these people determine the medical cause of death. In cases of gunshot wounds, they document the locations of the injuries and with varying degrees of completeness report the shapes, dimensions and anatomical orientations of the wounds. Interpretation of this forensic information is beyond the scope of pathologists and coroners for an important and fundamental reason. Our system of checks and balances as practiced during the sixties, demanded that another group of specialists, known as analysts, were looking over the shoulders of those determined the cause of injury or death. To be blunt, this system was designed to prevent a coroner from fabricating their report to protect the person who fired the fatal shot.
