"When the shots rang out, Hill rushed forward and — in a scene that would become iconic — leapt onto the president’s car in an effort to shield him and the first lady from the bullets. Mr. Ready, too, prepared to jump. But just as the third shot was fired, and as his driver veered to avoid hitting Hill, Mr. Ready was ordered to stay in place." (Emily Langer, Jack Ready, Secret Service agent who guarded Kennedy in Dallas, dies at 86, Washington Post, 2014) What this Emily Langer writes here, essentially, is that Ready was about to do his job, but Emory Roberts called him back, because he was afraid the car would hit SA Ready as the driver "veered to avoid hitting Hill"?! That's just so absurd it took a while to sink in. So, instead of letting Ready try and do his job, and protect (if way too late) the President while JFK is under fire, Roberts decides its more important that SA Ready doesn't hurt himself? Where does the follow-up car "veer to avoid Hill" anyway? Has Langer never seen the Zapruder film?
Hill & Blaine If you read the entire article, you see that Gerald Blaine and Clint Hill are the sources used for this odd version of reality. I wonder if Langer doesn't know any better, or doesn't care? Did she write a decent obituary and was it ruined by some editor? I understand that an obituary is not the platform for criticism. It is also not the place to kiss Clint Hills ass, Emily! Recently I listened to a podcast where Vince Palamara was speaking about his books and everytime Hill or Blaine pop up in the conversation, Vince 'veers off topic' and breaks into a tirade. That I understand better and better.
